How to master dosage calculations for nursing school?

Life is about solving all kinds of problems!

Practice, practice and practice. Practicing and solving few questions every day will help you. I am not the brightest when it comes to numbers. I always dreaded solving math problems but I realized you can never run away from numbers and the best way to master it is through practicing.

I solve my dosage calculations using the dimensional analysis method. The reason being is that you do not need an equation, you just need to cross out like units. I always avoided dimensional analysis but when I gave it a try, I felt like this was the easiest route. Down below I will list a few steps that I always follow when solving the questions.

  1. Do not let all the numbers in the question overwhelm you. Some number are there to trick you and are unnecessary.
  2. Read the question and write down all the values on the side.
  3. Look for the keyword. What is the question asking us to solve: is it mL, units, Kg, mL/hr, etc.?
  4. Take a deep breath.
  5. When solving using dimensional analysis always put the unit the question is asking for on the top.

I solved two questions from my practice packet and attached them down below. I have used all the steps and I hope this will help whoever is struggling with the dosage calculations.

As always feel free to comment if you have any questions and don’t forget to subscribe because all the exciting materials are coming soon..

Happy calculating!! 🙂
